While his songs remain cherished by many people, it's only now that the highly secretive 73-year-old has spoken about being gay and his secret wedding to manager Gary Kief.
The star has revealed that he felt pressurized to seem like he was straight, fearing some fans would be upset if they found out he is gay.
"I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay, so I never did anything," Manilow said during an interview with People.
He has been in love for 39 years with a man, now husband and still manager Garry, 68.
With tears in his eyes, the Mandy star said he was overwhelmed that fans did not push out when they found out he is gay.
"When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful strangers commenting 'great for you!'", an emotional Manilow said.
It, however, took a long time to get to that point, with the legendary singer often linked to TV production assistant Linda Allen.
Manilow even lived with Linda during his relationship with Garry. Even now, he refuses to discuss his love life before Garry aside from his first wife.
The couple went to great lengths to keep their relationship private, not just because Manilow was wary about revealing his sexuality, but also because his partner was not yet ready to deal with the fame.
Manilow said that he knew from the day he met Garry a Texas native- that he was the one.
