The Chinese government announced that it will no longer allow North Korean companies to work within its borders and that they must all cease their operations in China by early January. China made this declaration and confirmed that it will adhere to new United Nations sanctions on North Korea.
The U.N. Security Council had voted unanimously to impose new sanctions on North Korea on September 11 in response to the country's most recent nuclear-detonation test. China is a Security Council member and voted in favor accordingly.
However, China has already been downsizing its commercial activity with the isolated communist state. It cut its imports of North Korean coal and its two-way trade of seafood and iron with earlier this year. China has also banned textile trade with its neighbor completely and reduced its North Korean oil imports.
China's severing of economic ties with North Korea is a significant development as China is its primary trading partner. And until recently, China was North Korea's only major ally and usually advocated on its behalf. Chinese officials have increasingly soured on North Korea, however, in light of North Korea's escalating development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang stressed in a new briefing that China opposes any potential risk of armed conflict on the peninsula. He called for combining sanctions with the resumption of diplomatic discussions with the North Korean regime.
"Sanctions and the promoting of talks are both the requirements of the UN Security Council. We should not overemphasise one aspect while ignoring the other," Kang said.
