EL Chapo has been extradited from Mexico and given to the US to face more charges. The charge includes drug pending and amount to over 16 offenses.

He arrived in the US a day before Trump is sown into office to start a new process in court hearings.
The US had requested that El Chapo is handed over by the Mexican government so that he can answer for the acquisition on American soil.

El Chapo was on the run for two years before his capture and quickly those of the most wanted person in Mexico. Even after his capture he still escaped from prison twice, making him even more dangerous.
He was transported to the US amidst maximum security and handed to the US police across the border in a tightly secure procedure fearing another escape attempt during the transition.

The Justice Department extends its gratitude to the Government of Mexico for their extensive cooperation and assistance in securing the extradition of Guzman Loera to the United States, " the DOJ said in a statement. "We hope this is the start of a strong working relationship with Mexico."

Intel has it that the drug lord was handed over to the US as a gesture of good faith from the Mexican government to the incoming and outgoing tenures at the helm of power.

It is believed that it is a gesture from Mexico to show the US they are ready to work with them in fighting drugs and other issues that affect both the countries.
