Facebook plans to be more like YouTube than Netflix as it pays for video

With the new video tab that has already been rolled out to Facebook users in the US, Zuckerberg believes it will change the way people view videos on Facebook.

Recent reports had linked Facebook to talks with TV stations and a set top box in the pipeline in preparation for their own shows.

Mark Zuckerberg has come out to set the record straight, and he says Facebook is interested in investing in video clips rather than a long movie like features. The CEO stated that he sees videos as a mega trend and the way to go for the future.

Facebook will pay video makers up front and through ad revenue to get their content on News Feed and video tab. This means that Facebook is more interested in the YouTube model of collecting lots of short video clips.

With the new video tab that has already been rolled out to Facebook users in the US, Zuckerberg believes it will change the way people view videos on Facebook.

"Say I want to watch video content now," Zuckerberg says. "That's what I think we're going to unlock with this tab. The early trends are real."

The dedicated visitorship and a good business model will see more people opting to view the video tab, and it will mean including mid-roll ads that don't scare off viewers.

Zuckerberg believes that compared to photos where one needs to thumb through content, videos offer a lean back kind of option and will be more pleasant to watch even on the go.

In the pre-video era, Facebook and Instagram are trying to detach us from the present by making our phones our first televisions.
