A UK-based security consultant said on Friday that GOP researcher Peter Smith was tracking down emails missing from Hillary Clinton's email server last year with the support of Russian hackers and the Trump campaign. Matt Tait, CEO and founder of the UK consultant firm Capital Alpha Security, wrote in a post on the site Lawfare that Smith had tried to recruit him last spring to help validate numerous Clinton emails that he had allegedly obtained from Russian hackers and was planning to distribute to Trump campaign officials.
Prior to last year's presidential election, Smith formed a team of lawyers, technical experts, and Russian-speaking investigators to track down 33,000 emails that had been deleted from Clinton's server. Smith told reporters that he believed Clinton's server had been hacked. Allegedly, the team hoped to uncover the emails by obtaining copies from hackers.
Smith later told the Wall Street Journal that he found some emails but could not verify them. He also said that his team found five hacking groups that claimed to have more emails, and that at least two of them were Russian.
Tait wrote in his Friday post that Smith and his team carried out all of this work "with the blessing of the Trump campaign," adding that "Smith and his associates' knowledge of the inner workings of the campaign were insightful beyond what could be obtained by merely attending Republican events or watching large amounts of news coverage."
Tait never saw any of the emails, however. And his account contradicts that of former FBI Director James Comey, who told Congress last year that he did not believe any hackers had breached Clinton's server.
Smith has since died.
