Iran is sending Qatar daily provisions of fruit, vegetables, and other food supplies while Qataris cope with a trade and travel embargo that six other Arab nations imposed on the small Persian Gulf nation last week, Iranian officials said. The officials said that their country took this action because Qatar's people are at risk of critical food shortages.

Qatar is a significant exporter of oil and natural gas, but it imports 80% of its food from its Gulf Arab neighbors. Qatari officials have sought out aid from Iran and Turkey to provide Qataris with emergency supplies until the diplomatic crisis subsides.

Iran has answered the call by sending three cargo planes to Qatar each day loaded with 100 tons of fruits and vegetables, according to an Iranian diplomat, who said that small boats are also making routes to Qatar to bring other, less-perishable foods. Also, livestock exporters have shipped 66 tons of meat to Qatar in the last two days.

"Dozens of Iranian businesses are ready to help Qatar with more goods if they are needed," the diplomat said.

International talks are ongoing among the Arab states over Qatar's alleged support of terrorist militants and armed insurrections in its neighbors' territories. Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Egypt, and Bahrain all severed ties with Qatar, citing these allegations, and imposed various forms of official bans on travel to or from Qatar or trade with Qatar.

Kuwait is facilitating talks to attempt to bridge the divides, and Morocco has offered to assist. The United States has issued mixed messages on the matterTrump offered to host talks at the White House but subsequently said that Qatar is a terrorism sponsor and that its neighbors are right to punish it.
