According to celebrity gossip website TMZ, unknown sources revealed that Mariah called time on the relationship because of his "insane jealousy' and her "shutting the cash register" on Tanaka.
The relationship is thought to have ended at the end of March, after the couple's trip to Cabo.
According to the gossip site, Tanaka was in "unbridled fury" over Mariah's close friendship with her ex-husband Nick Cannon.
"She's been chummy with him (Cannon) for sure, mostly for the benefit of their twins," the anonymous source was quoted as saying, adding that Mariah and Cannon vacation as a family, and attend dinner and parties together, sometimes without the children.
It is claimed that Tanaka felt disrespected when Cannon and Mariah came together to the Kids' Choice Awards last month.
According to the source, Tanaka would retaliate by flirting and coming on to women in Mariah's plain view.
The source also added that Tanaka has expensive tastes, and Carey ended up footing the bill for super-expensive Gucci and Balmain togs, as well as high-end watches and jewelry.
The final nail in the coffin was Mariah's suspicion that Tanaka was using her for fame.
Mariah was previously engaged to Australian billionaire Jack Packer, and their break-up and the pop star's subsequent relationship with the 33-year-old Tanaka were documented on the reality show, 'Mariah's World.'
Tanaka used to be Mariah's backup dancer.
On March 21, Mariah announced on her Twitter account that her classic Christmas tune, 'All I Want for Christmas' is being made into a movie.
The song will be adapted into a Universal Studios animated movie and will be released in time for this year's holiday period.
