He said that Trump should give Congress more time and space to work his agenda through the chamber.

President Trump's latest criticisms of Congress and the legislative process got a rebuke Monday from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said he was frustrated with Trump's "excessive expectations" of Republicans' power to pass legislation and at Trump's imposition of "artificial deadlines." Speaking at the Florence Rotary Club in Kentucky, McConnell suggested that the president may simply not understand how lawmaking really works.
"Now our new president has of course not been in this line of work before. And I think had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process," McConnell said. "And so, part of the reason I think people feel like we're underperforming is because too many artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality and the complexity of legislature may not have been fully understood."
Trump had swiped at Congress after the Senate GOP's repeated failures to get its health-care overhaul passed. On July 29th, after a measure to move forward with the Senate GOP bill failed by one vote, Trump took to Twitter to demand that McConnell ditch the filibuster: "The very outdated filibuster rule must go. Budget reconciliation is killing R's in Senate. Mitch M, go to 51 Votes NOW and WIN. IT'S TIME!"
Removing the filibuster would not have helped the health-care bill, however. It failed to get even a simple majority of votes.
McConnell criticized Trump further for expecting too much from Congress in too little time. He said that Trump should give Congress more time and space to work his agenda through the chamber.
"A Congress goes on for two years," McConnell said. "And part of the reason I think that this storyline is that we haven't done much is because in part the president and others have set these early timelines about things need to be done by a certain point."
