Former White House National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and his son, Michael Flynn Jr., are being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for their possible roles in a plot to kidnap dissident Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and turn him over to the Turkish government, according to a report by Bloomberg.

FBI agents have talked to several people about a meeting held in mid-December in which Flynn discusses capturing Gulen, who is in exile in the United States, with representatives of the Turkish government. The meeting occurred around the time that President-elect Donald Trump named Flynn as his national security adviser.

Flynn resigned as Trump's national security adviser on Feb. 13, after less than a month on the job following revelations that Flynn had failed to disclose contacts with Russians during the campaign.

Turkey's strong-arm President Erdogan, who blames Gulen for a 2016 coup attempt, has demanded the cleric's extradition from the U.S.

Flynn allegedly talked with Turkish officials about a plan forcibly to seize Gulen from his compound in Pennsylvania, put him in a private jet, and fly him to a penal colony on the Turkish island of Imrali.

Investigators also are probing whether Flynn violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act by not disclosing his work on behalf of the Turkish government.

"The disclosure law is designed to separate legitimate foreign lobbyists from spies," said Patrick Cotter, a Chicago defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor, in the Bloomberg report. "Because when you get down to it, if you're a foreign agent being paid by a foreign government and no one knows it, you're a spy."
