Pornhub will use machine learning to improve site

Pornhub plans to use facial recognition AI to make their site more efficient.

Pornhub has announced that it will begin using machine learning to better and more quickly catalogue its videos.

Artificial intelligence has rapidly advanced over the past few years. Among those features is the ability to tell what is going on in both photos and videos. Pornhub hopes to take advantage of that advancement by making their site much easier to navigate.

The company will begin this process by putting out facial recognition software that will detect 10,000 different porn stars and tag them in footage. This process is typically conducted by viewers, but the machine should be able to do it much more efficiently. Once that is completed, the company believes they will be able to scan all 5 million of its videos on their site within the next year. From there, they want to expand the technology so it can organize certain categories, such as "public" or "blonde."

"So far we've used the model on about 500k featured videos which includes user submitted and we plan to scan the whole library in the beginning of 2018," said Pornhub VP Corey Price, according to TechCrunch. "Very shortly, the technology will also be used to detect various sex positions / categories and be able to properly tag them as well."

While the new move will help the site join up with other firms using AI to generate fast results, the speed at which the AI processes the data will not be that much faster than the current crowdsourced system. The beta can only scan roughly 50,000 videos in a month. At that pace, it would take nearly a decade to look at every single video on the site. However, the company reports some improvements are already in the works to make it both faster and more efficient.

"Ultimately, we want to provide our fans with whatever it is they have a penchant for, and our new model will be able to surface more accurate results for them, which will hopefully keep them coming back for," The Verge. "The easier it is to navigate and access what they want, the happier they will be."

While there are some privacy concerns with the new technology, Pornhub claims there will be no such issues because the system only identifies faces of known performers that are already in the database.
