Embattled White House press secretary Sean Spicer abruptly resigned Friday morning in protest over President Trump's appointment of Anthony Scaramucci as communications director, according to a report in The New York Times.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was promoted to the position of press secretary, said in a statement during a White House briefing that the president was grateful for Spicer's service.

"It's been an honor & a privilege to serve @POTUS @realDonaldTrump & this amazing country. I will continue my service through August," tweeted Spicer.

Mr. Scaramucci, 52, is a Harvard law graduate and New York financier who founded the global investment firm SkyBridge Capital. He also is a Fox News contributor.

Spicer is said to have been unwilling to hold a position subordinate to Scaramucci.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, reportedly has been unhappy with Spicer and Marc Kasowitz, who recently resigned as the president's lead attorney handling the Russia investigation.

Senior White House staff were blindsided by the surprise shake-up, the Times report said, including Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus objected to the appointment of Scaramucci, saying he did not have the required experience. Trump disagreed, however, believing that Scaramucci can translate his role as spirited Trump defender on Fox News to a forceful advocate within the administration.

In addition to Kushner, the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, supported the appointment of Scarmucci.

Scaramucci's appointment comes two months after the resignation of Mike Dubke, the previous communications director.
