Kathy Griffin announced the end Friday of the Secret Service's investigation of her controversial Trump-beheading photo earlier this year. The comedian tweeted that "the case is closed" and that she has been "completely exonerated."

Her announcement countered a fake news story circulating the Internet that said Griffin could face jail time for the photo. The photo did cause widespread criticism of Griffin and prompted the Secret Service to interview her for a full hour to screen her as a potential "threat" to the president, but she will not face any legal charges.

The photo went public in May and featured Griffin holding a fake bloodied man's head that resembled President Trump's. She tweeted the photo and wrote above it: "I caption this 'there was blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming out of his ... wherever'"a reference to disparaging words Trump had said about former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly during the presidential primary season.

Trump condemned the photo at the time as "sick," and numerous entertainment venues where Griffin was scheduled to perform cancelled her events. CNN also cut ties with her and dropped her from an annual New Year's Eve special that she co-hosted with Anderson Cooper.

Griffin apologized for the photo shortly afterward and apologized again in a June press conference. During that press conference, she also said that she has received numerous "specific," "detailed" death threats in turn from the president's followers, and that Trump family members were "bullying," her, as well.

"You shouldn't have to die for this," Griffin said.
