The hosts of MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' program have responded to widely condemned personal attacks against them by President Donald Trump by accusing him of threatening to get the National Enquirer to publish a negative story about them unless they apologized for their negative on-air coverage of him. They also questioned his mental fitness for office.

In a couple of tweets Thursday, Trump called co-host Mika Brzezinski daughter of former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski "low I.Q. Crazy Mika," and said she had been "bleeding badly from a facelift" when he saw her at his Mar-A-Lago estate during New Year's Eve festivities, according to ABC News. He also referred to her co-host and fiance, Joe Scarborough, as "Psycho Joe."

The television hosts responded to the president Friday in a column appearing in The Washington Post. They said Trump's tweets showed "a fragile, childlike ego" that should be of deep concern to the nation. They also said that White House staff had tried to exert undue pressure on them to apologize to Trump for criticizing him.

"This year, top White House staff members warned that the National Enquirer was planning to publish a negative article about us unless we begged the President to have the story spiked," they wrote, as reported by The New York Times. "We ignored their desperate pleas."

Trump shot back on Twitter Friday morning.

"Watched low rated @Morning_Joe for first time in long time. FAKE NEWS. He called me to stop a National Enquirer article. I said no! Bad show."

Scarborough then accused the president of lying.

"Yet another lie," he tweeted. "I have texts from your top aides and phone records. Also those records show I haven't spoken with you in many months."
