On Tuesday, Hostess recalled the multipack boxes, which contained nine cakes in each box. The specific reason for the recall, as evidenced by only the special edition being recalled, has to do with a certain ingredient. No other Hostess product, including the original Twinkies, have been recalled by the company. Blommer Chocolate Co., which produces the confectionary coating that was used on the holiday edition Twinkies, has also announced a recall. The coating used by Blommer Chocolate also contains certain milk powder ingredients that are produced by a group called Valley Milk Products LLC. It is Valley Milk Products LLC and their milk powder product that may have been contaminated with salmonella. There was salmonella found at the Valley Milk Products LLC manufacturing plant. Salmonella was found in several sources, which included 50 pound bags of high heat nonfat dry milk powder and sweet cream butter milk powder.
"We are truly sorry for any distress this recall causes to our retail customers and to consumers," said Marty Palmer, president and CEO of Palmer Candy, which also announced a recall of a number of its chocolate confections including its candy party bowl, almond and peppermint bark and covered pretzels. "We remain committed to the highest standards in food quality and safety. We are taking this recall very seriously and truly appreciate the cooperation of our customers as we work to resolve this matter promptly."
