Wi-Fi signals can let hackers see into your house

Wi-Fi signals have been found to be an entrance to your home.

Researchers have discovered that cyber thieves can exploit the signal's microwave radiation to create three-dimensional images of a place, the objects and people inside.

And they suggest that this hack can generate scans of buildings and tracking individuals indoors.

The hack could also be used to locate people buried by avalanches or earthquakes.

The discovery was made by scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The scientists developed a holographic imaging process that depicts the radiation of a Wi-Fi transmitter to generate 3D images of the surrounding area.

The researchers' method allows them to create holograms. The holograms project a seemingly three-dimensional image similar to that of peering through the window of a home.

Compared to optical holograms which require elaborate laser technology, generating holograms with the microwave of a Wi-Fi transmitter requires only a single fixed and one mobile antenna.

Using this technology, we can produce a three-dimensional image of the space around the Wi-Fi transmitter, as if our eyes could see the microwave radiation," said Friedemann Reinhard, director of the Emmy Noether Research Group for Quantum Sensors at the Walter Schottky Institute of the TU in Munich.

According to the scientists, even Bluetooth and cell phone signals can be used to generate views.

The devices' wavelengths correspond to a spatial resolution of a few centimeters.

Previous research has shown it is possible to use microwave radiation to see through walls.

However, the team at TUM has developed a new approach that allows them to create an image of the entire space through holographic processing of Wi-Fi or cell phone signals.
