Carrie Underwood is opening up about her scary fall that led to 40 to 50 stitches in her face, as well as surgery for her broken wrist, according to PEOPLE. She talked to Today show's Hoda Kotb about the circumstances of the accident and the recovery that followed.

"Plain and simple, it was just kind of a freak accident," the "Cry Pretty" singer, 35, told Kotb on Thursday. "I just fell. I just tripped taking my dogs out to do their business. It could happen to anybody."

"I say if I would have fallen anywhere else, it wouldn't have been a problem," she said. "There was one little step that I went to catch myself on and I missed."

The singer told Kotb that she fell outside of her Nashville home on Nov. 10, 2017, and aside from her 3-year-old son Isaiah who was sleeping upstairs, she was alone.

Underwood went quiet on social media for a while as she recovered, and in December 2017, Below Deck alum Adrienne Gang posted the first picture of her that fans would see post-fall.

And in the January following the accident, the country star revealed that in addition to wrist surgery, she had to get "40 and 50 stitches" to her face.

Although Kotb told the pop star that her face looks "the same," Underwood claims that things weren't always certain.

"In the beginning, I didn't know how things were going to end up," she said. "It just wasn't pretty."

"I have a dedicated team of professionals who can spackle and paint and paste," she added. "Every day I'm feeling a little more back to normal."
