Although David Lynchknown for his trademark "Lynchian Horror" filmmakingsays he's "not really a political person," he endorsed Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primary and says he "really like[s] the freedom to do what you want to do."

But he also thinks Trump has potential.

"He could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much," he said. "No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way."

And while he says Trump "may not be doing a good job himself," he could provide a roadmap for outsiders.

"Our so-called leaders can't take the country forward, can't get anything done," he said. "Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this."

Lynch also spoke on his work/life balance in the recentGuardian interview.

"You gotta be selfish," he said. "And it's a terrible thing. I never really wanted to get married, never really wanted to have children. One thing leads to another and there it is."

Lynch was most famously involved in Isabella Rossellini, who starred in his movies "Blue Velvet" and "Wild at Heart." But he fell in love with actressMary Sweeney during the latter film.

"David has this incredible sweetness but [he] completely cut me out of his life," she said. "I didn't see it coming."

David Lynch most recently directed the second season of Twin Peaks.
