Lawsuit charges Google with discriminating against women in pay, promotions

Three women ex-employees of Google are suing the company for what they say is bias against women in its hiring and salary decisions. The case is the latest in a series of lawsuits against tech companies over gender pay disparities.

Three women who formerly worked for Google-owned Alphabet Inc. filed a lawsuit Thursday accusing their former employer of systematically paying and promoting its female employees less than its male employees. The lawsuit, which they filed as a class-action suit in the California state court in San Francisco, adds to the legal challenges Google is already facing from the U.S. Department of Labor over allegations of paying men disproportionately more than women.
"While Google has been an industry-leading tech innovator, its treatment of female employees has not entered the 21st century," Kelly Dermody, a lawyer for the women, said in a statement.
The three plaintiffs include a former Google software engineer, a former manager, and a former communications specialist. They each said that women earn less than men for similar work and that the company gives women jobs that are less likely to lead to promotions.
Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano disputed the claims. She said in a statement that employment and promotion decisions all go through committees that vet them "to make sure there is no gender bias."
The Labor Department suspects that gender bias persists within the pay scales, however. It launched an investigation into the issue after auditing records of Google's 2015 wages and finding male-female wage gaps among Google workers.
Other tech companies besides Google are under fire over gender pay gaps. The Labor Department also sued Oracle in January on claims that it was paying white men more than women and people of color for similar jobs. Other lawsuits have gone to court against Microsoft, Twitter, and Qualcomm.
