Neo-nazi website praises Trump's Charlottesville reaction

President Trump's equivocal response to the violence in Charlottesville last weekend spurred criticism from conservatives and liberals alike who argued that he should have explicitly condemned the white supremacists. But a prominent group of white supremacists thinks he handled it just the way they would have wanted him to.

"He didn't attack us. He just said the nation should come together. Nothing specific against us," wrote Andrew Anglin, founder of the Daily Stormer, one of the most widely read white-nationalist websites in the United States. "When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him."

The Daily Stormer adopted its name from a Nazi Party tabloid, Der Sturmer. The website regularly lambasts Muslims, African Americans, immigrants, and Israel, and posts editorials that forecast a coming "race war."

The Daily Stormer isn't alone in praising Trump. David Duke, former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard, said on Saturday that the white supremacists demonstrating in Charlottesville as part of the "Unite the Right" rally were in line with the "promises" Trump had made during his campaign to "take the country back."

The rally turned violent after clashes between protesters and counter-protesters erupted. Three people died, including one victim of a car that drove into a crowd, along with two state troopers who were killed in a helicopter crash.

Trump made a statement in which he said that there was "violence all around" and called for "unity" but did not criticize the white supremacists themselves. Even staunchly conservative GOP lawmakers scolded Trump over this, including senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.).
