Rep. Maxine Waters cancels events after death threats

Days after President Trump tweeted that Rep. Maxine Waters better "be careful,".

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) called off weekend events in Alabama and Texas on account of a "very serious death threat," CNN reported. The threat was one of numerous hostile calls and written warnings her office has reportedly received following President Trump's tweet Monday targeting Waters over recent remarks.

Waters incurred the president's ire last Saturday when she told supporters in a speech that they should confront and call out members of the Trump administration in public. She was speaking in the context of the Virginia restaurant owner who had told White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave her restaurant, followed by a crowd of 15 protesters gathering at another restaurant where Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was dining and chanting at her until she left.

Trump attacked Water on Twitter on Monday, typing that Waters is "an extraordinarily low IQ person" who "has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!"

Waters' speech did not call for any violence against Trump administration members or supporters. She clarified Monday that she believes in "very peaceful protests" against the administration and its policies.

But anonymous individuals contacted Waters' office threatening to "shoot, lynch, or cause me serious bodily harm," Waters said. The threat that drove her to cancel her events was from an individual in Texas, she added.

"As the president has continued to lie and falsely claim that I encouraged people to assault his supporters, while also offering a veiled threat that I should 'be careful,' even more individuals are leaving[threatening] messages and sending hostile mail to my office," Waters said.
