Police in Troy, New York, have identified the same-sex couple and two children found horrifically murdered in a basement apartment.

Slain Shanta Myers, 36, was the mother of the murdered children, Jeremiah Myers, 11, and five-year-old Shanise Myers. Also killed was Brandi Mells, 22, who police said was in a relationship with Shanta Myers, according to a report by ABC News.

The murders, which were discovered Tuesday by the property manager, are likely not a random act, said Troy Police Chief John Tedesco at a news conference, adding that officials do not believe the public is in imminent danger.

Tedesco called for anyone with information about the crime to contact the police. He said no one involved would ever forget the horrific murders.

"Being in this business for almost 42 years, I can't describe the savagery of a person like this," Tedesco said, as reported by Fox News. "I don't think there's any doubt that a person who committed this crime is capable of anything."

Law enforcement declined to give details about the precise manner or reason for the murders.

City Council member Mark McGrath said the killings have stunned residents.

"For someone to do this to two children is horrific," McGrath said. "I can't even explain how people feel up here. We've had homicides here in the past, as all communities do, but children it really, really has affected this community."

Captain Dan DeWolf of the Troy Police Department said photos of the victims were being released to appeal to the public for any information regarding the case.
